{INTEGRATED ART LESSON}

Students will learn elements of a map (key, title, scale, simple grid system, compass rose) and how maps can be used to tell us information about a place by reviewing maps in an atlas and listening to a lecture. Students will actually draw a map of Africa freehand (it may not be very accurate). The students will use a drawing technique with a grid to copy and enlarge the continent onto their drawing paper. Students will use the elements and principles of art (value with the watercolor and proportion with the grid) to create a map of Africa. They will use pencil to sketch their drawing, and thin sharpie to draw over the pencil lines. They will use the watercolor technique, blending, to accurately show the climate areas in Africa. Students will use proper elements of a map by including a key, title, scale, simple grid system, and compass rose. To conclude the lesson, students will compare their experience drawing map freehand to drawing one using a grid as a guide through discussion and completion of a worksheet by using the simple grid system and be assessed on accuracy.
